Renaissance was an era of European cultural, economic, political, and artistic rebirth after the Middle Ages which span between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries. The renaissance marked the transition from the Middle Age to modernity. Some of the greatest artists, scientists, politicians, authors, and thinkers thrived during this period, while exploration opened up new cultures and lands to European commerce. It was a cultural movement that affected the intellectual during the early modern era. Starting in Italy, the renaissance spread to the rest of the continent by the sixteenth century. Its influence was felt in religion, science, politics, music, art, philosophy, and literature.

The Origin Of Renaissance

Numerous scholars argue that the idea of renaissance originated from Florence during the thirteenth century, particularly Giotto Bondone’s paintings and the writings of Petrarch and Alighieri Dante. Some writers claim that it began when Ghiberti Lorenzo and Brunelleschi Filippo were fighting for the contract to build Florence cathedral’s doors in 1401. Others consider the competition between polymaths and artists for artistic commissions as what sparked the creativity in Florence. Although the reason why renaissance began in Italy when it did is still much debated. Michelet Jules described the sixteenth-century renaissance in France as an era of the cultural history of Europe that created a modern understanding of humanity and a break from the Middle-Age.

History Of Florence

Even though it is known for its numerous achievements during the renaissance and Middle Ages, Florence is one of the oldest European cities which began in 59BC. The city was founded by Julius Caesar and named ‘’Florentia’’ which means flourishing. Julius Caesar made Florence a haven for retired military veterans. The city was designed as an army camp, and the pattern is still evident to date. Since it was located on fertile land and along a major trading route between Rome and Italy, the city grew steadily from a small settlement to a wealthy commercial city.

Florence became the capital of Tuscany, previously known as Tuscia. The city’s economic strength attracted numerous immigrants, thus setting a stage for the renaissance. Florence maintains its reputation of innovation between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. There were various artists in the city during that era, and Florence exported high-quality wool to Europe. Some of the most famous artists who came to Florence to build their masterpieces included Leonardo da Vinci, Ghirlandaio, Botticelli, and Michelangelo. Their masterpieces are still preserved to date in various parts of the city and are the main tourist attractions in Florence.
