  • (1000 BC) Ciboney people attempted to settle in St. Barts, left due to the lack of water
1400s -1600s
  • (1493) Christopher Columbus sailed near St. Eustatius
  • (1636) Island colonized by the chamber of Zeeland of the Dutch West India Company
  • (1638) First shipment of St. Eustatius grown tobacco sent to Holland
  • (1639) Dutch colonized St. Eustatius, built Fort Oranje
  • (1672) War between Dutch Republic and France broke out, England sided with France, took possession of St. Eustatius, forced the Dutch West India Company to cease trading
  • (1678) With Treaty of Nijmegen, St. Eustatius fell under direct command of the Dutch West India Company
  • (1682) Administration of St. Eustatius and Saba changed to a Dutch colony governed by the Dutch West India Company
1700s - 1800s
  • (1756) St. Eustatius served as a free port with no customs duties; the island was known as "The Golden Rock", economy flourished by ignoring the trade embargoes between the great powers
  • (1776) Cannons of Fort Oranje, St. Eustatius were fired to salute the flag of the independent U.S. – the "First Salute"
  • (1780) England declared war on the Netherlands; the great hurricane caused cataclysmic damage and the loss of over 4,000 lives on St. Eustatius
  • (1781) Island taken by the English fleet; St. Eustatius pillaged by the troops of Admiral George Brydges Rodney; all Jewish, along with the governor, were deported; synagogue and many Jewish homes burned
  • (1781) French conquered the island, British driven away
  • (1784) Dutch regained command over the island
  • (1790) St. Eustatius reached its peak population of 8,124
  • (1830) Large merchants left the Lower Town warehouses
  • (1919) St. Eustatius, Saba, and St. Maarten united as Netherlands Windward Islands
  • (1954) St. Eustatius, Saba, and St. Maarten united with Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao as the Netherlands Antilles, a separate country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands
  • (2005) 77% of voters voted to remain within the Netherlands Antilles
  • (2005) Island council opted to become a public body of the Netherlands like Saba and Bonaire
  • (2010) St. Eustatius became special municipality of the Netherlands following dissolution of Netherlands Antilles
  • (2011) U S Dollar became the official currency
