Covering a total land area of 983,482sq.km, The State of South Australia is a large state located in the southern-central part of Australia. South Australia occupies nearly one-eighth of the total land area of the Australian Continent.
As observed on the map, South Australia is composed of an arid to semi-arid terrain with numerous low mountain ranges. The state’s most significant mountain system is the Mount Lofty-Flinders Ranges which extend for about 800km in the northern part of South Australia. Located in the extreme northwestern part of the state is the Musgrave Ranges is Mount Woodroffe, which rises to an elevation of 1,435m and is the highest point in South Australia. The Great Victoria Desert occupies the western part of South Australia. The southwestern part of the state is occupied by the flat, treeless Nullabor Plain which is fronted by the spectacular coastal cliffs of the Great Australian Bight. The coastline is highly indented and features the Spencer Gulf, Gulf St. Vincent, and the Eyre and Yorke Peninsulas. Located to the south of Gulf St. Vincent is the Kangaroo Island, which covers an area of about 4,350 sq. km. The Murray River is the only permanent stream in the state. Some other significant water bodies include Lake Eyre, Lake Gairdner, Lake Torrens, and Lake Frome. Lake Eyre at -16m forms the lowest point of South Australia.
