Due to the vast grove of hardwood timber in the region, Council Grove was founded in the late 1840s. The area served as a camping and gathering spot for Native Americans, explorers, soldiers, and Santa Fe Trail traders, where they discovered plenty of water, grass, and abundant wood due to the extensive groves of hardwood timber. People in the surrounding region were also allowed to use fallen timber for fuel. The city was named after the Council Oak tree, under which a council of United States officials and leaders of the Great and Little Osage allegedly met and signed a treaty in 1825. In exchange for an $8000 payment to the Osage, this treaty granted Americans and Hispanics unfettered transit along the Santa Fe Trail across Osage territory. Some years ago, a storm destroyed the tree, but a canopy still protects the trunk. The National Register of Historic Places lists 13 sites in the town. The Post Office Oak is one such example. Travelers put their mail in this particular tree, which was picked up by others traveling in the same way. General Custer of the United States Army camped there with his troops under a massive tree named Custer Elm during the American Civil War.
