  • The Middlemist’s Red had gotten its name from the man who brought it to the United Kingdom from China, John Middlemist.
  • There are only two locations in the entire world where we can see the Middlemist’s Red, One in the United Kingdom, and the Other in New Zealand.
  • The Middlemist’s Red is the rarest out of the documented flowers in the world, however, the actual numbers of all flowers can be wildly different than we believe, since they are so hard to document.

The phrase “the rarest flower in the world” may sound like a quote from a fairy tale, but the world of plants on our planet is filled with flowers that often seem like they came straight out of a science fiction movie. Some are known for their beauty, some for being dangerous, while some are incredibly rare. The world of flowers is something that makes our planet extremely beautiful, and it adds to the mystery of nature.

It is believed that there are around 400,000 different kinds of flowers on our planet, and there are possibly some that haven’t been discovered yet as well. It is extremely hard to determine which single flower is the rarest on earth, but we can try to narrow it down to several of the most well-known ones. The flowers that are most commonly referred to as the rarest ones are Corpse Flower, Jade Vine, and Ghost Orchid. However, if we look at the flowers that have concrete information about their population size, the answer is clear. The rarest flower in the world is the Middlemist Red.

The Middlemist’s Red

The scientific name of this flower is the Unspecified Camellia, and currently, there are only two known examples of this flower in the entire world. One is located at a greenhouse in New Zealand, while the other one can be found in the United Kingdom, in Chiswick House. We do not have information about any other locations where this flower can be found, which officially makes it the rarest flower in the world.

This flower originally came to England from China in 1804. The person that brought it westward was John Middlemist. He gave the extremely rare flower as a gift to the Kew Gardens. However, the flower vanished several decades later. It wasn’t until recently that another one bloomed at a greenhouse in the United Kingdom. The gorgeous flower is blooming again, and hopefully, we will not repeat the mistake of losing it again. There is not a lot of information available about the one in New Zealand.

The Rarity Of the Flower

Despite there being two known examples of this flower in the world, there may be many more which are undocumented. The lower was sold in the past, and some people might have it growing in their gardens without them knowing. This is why it is extremely hard to determine what the rarest flower in the world is. Some flowers might seem rare at first, but they might be blooming in extremely high numbers at an unexplored location.

This flower is known for its beauty and for being extremely rare. There are other flowers with extremely low documented numbers. Another well-known example is the Tanzania Coral Tree, with anywhere from 10 to 50 examples blooming in the world. Cooke’s Koki’o is a flower with only 23 examples blooming in nature that are known to biologists. Some other extremely rare flowers include Western Underground Orchid, Sinai Wild Rose, and the Franklin Tree.
