Central to Boernee's downtown is the Main Plaza. This is one of the best spots to start exploring downtown. The plaza serves as the heart of the community, hosting events and celebrations throughout the year. The plaza is conveniently located on Main Street, making it easily accessible on foot. At the plaza, you will find a large gazebo, which is often used for events and gatherings, and plenty of green space for enjoying the area. There is also access to the Cibolo Trail here, a great trail for nature lovers. The Main Plaza also has public restrooms and paved sidewalks, making it a great rest stop for exploring Boerne's downtown area.

Market Days are one of the most popular events hosted at Main Plaza. They are held on the second Saturday and Sunday of every month. More than 100 craft booths and food vendors line the plaza. Visiting Main Plaza for the Market Days is a great way to experience the local culture.

Boerne Community Theatre

When you are at the Main Plaza, getting around downtown is easy. If you are in the mood for afternoon entertainment, consider walking down to the Community Theater. Walking to the theater from the Main Plaza typically takes 15 to 20 minutes. To get there, starting from the Main Plaza, head east onto E Blanco Road, then continue down this road, and the theater will be on the left. Established in 1991, the theater hosts a variety of shows, including plays, musicals, and special events. Some of the past shows at the theater include Annie and Sense and Sensibility. If you are a lover of the dramatic arts, this venue is not to be missed!

Hill Country Mile

From the Main Plaza, Main Street is also easy to access on foot. If you head south on Main Street, you will enter the Hill Country Mile section of the downtown. This stretch of the street features a blend of shops, restaurants, galleries, and local attractions. Walking from the Main Plaza to the heart of the Hill Country Mile takes around 10 to 15 minutes. Once you are there, enjoy strolling through the section of downtown, browsing through the local businesses. Feeling like browsing some art? Stop into Carriage House Gallery. Owned by 11 artist partners, the gallery offers original artwork and limited edition prints.

Afterward, check out the cozy, independent-run bookstore, The Boerne Bookshop. Handmade on Main is an artisanal shop featuring locally made items, making it a great spot to grab a souvenir. After browsing through the shops, rest your feet and stop into one of the local restaurants for a tasty bite. Bear Moon Bakery Cafe is a popular spot to stop for a coffee or a pastry.

Beyond being close to local shops, restaurants, and community events, Boerne's downtown also has stunning historical architecture. Many of the buildings in town date back to the town's founding in the mid-1800s. Main Street downtown has a historic district that spans over one mile. Strolling down this strip, you can easily admire many of the town's historic buildings. For example, the Kendall Inn is in a building that has been around for 160 years. Admire the historic charm of the building and consider staying here for the night in one of the 34 uniquely designed rooms.

Just a short walk away from the Inn are other historical buildings, such as the Joseph Dienger Building. Originally a dry goods store in 1859, the historic spot has been transformed into a café and boutique with a wraparound porch. If you continue walking through the historic district, you will come across the Kuhlmann-King House. Built in 1885, this house was transformed into a museum by German immigrant William Kuhlmann and shows 19th-century life.

Walking north on Main Street, if you turn left onto E Blanco Road and turn right onto Herff Lane, you will see the entrance to Herff Park. This is the perfect spot to take a peaceful break from the concrete. The park has walking trails, picnic areas, a playground, and access to the Cibolo Creek, which makes it a great spot for enjoying the outdoors. The park is also home to numerous bird species, making it an ideal spot for bird enthusiasts. Stroll through the park and admire the serene environment of Cibolo Creek, or explore the historic structures and informational plaques that delve into the area's rich past.

Other Downtowns to Explore

After exploring Boerne's downtown, you might want to explore other Texas towns. Wimberley is an hour away from Boerne, but the town is worth visiting. Similar to Boerne, Wimberley has a mix of cute shops and eateries in its downtown. One of the town's cozy cafes is Cypress Creek Coffeehouse. Stop in for a coffee or a tasty treat. Wimberley also has a lively art scene with art galleries showing off local talent. A unique gallery to visit is the Wildflower Art Gallery, which features colorful wildflower paintings. The Wimberley Valley Art League Gallery is another art gallery that showcases regional artists' works.

If you do not mind driving a little further north, Granbury is another Texas town similar to Boerne. A little over a three-hour drive away, Granbury's downtown is worth the drive. The streets are lined with well-preserved historic buildings dating back to the 19th century. Walk around and admire the rich history of the area. History buffs looking to learn more can visit the town's Hood County Jail Museum.
