Map of Comoros
Description

The archipelago of Comoros is situated in the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean between the eastern coast of Africa and Madagascar.

It includes three volcanic islands and numerous coral reefs and uninhabited islets. Mayote, the most southern island, remains a French dependency, although claimed by Comoros.

Long an Arab trading outpost along the East African coast, the islands were annexed by France in the late 1800s. They finally gained their independence in 1975.

Since then, numerous coups, and inter-island disagreements have led to political unrest and instability, and when combined with a growing population, few natural resources and a limited food supply, the future of Comoros is uncertain.

The islands depend heavily on imports of basic necessities, often paid for by foreign aid. In addition, the health care system is inadequate, illiteracy is widespread, and its international debt is growing.

Through it all, spices are a profitable export, and tourism provides a significant local source of revenue. France, its financial benefactor, remains an active trading partner.

Land

Land Area 2,230 sq km (861 sq miles)

Landforms Volcanic in origin, the islands are rugged and windswept.

Grand Comore (Njazidja,), the largest island, is an irregular plateau anchored by two volcanoes. The land rises to the island's highest point, the active crater of Mount Kartala, a large, gently sloping volcano in the shape of a flattened dome and built almost exclusively of lava flows.

Anjouan (Nzwani,) the second largest island is a similar lava plateau with three volcanic mountain chains.

Moheli (Mwali) has a smaller, central mountain chain, with some rain forests. The ancient lava flows here eroded over time into a series of valleys, punctuated by small rivers (streams).

Mayotte, the oldest of the islands, has also dramatically eroded over time, and is well-watered by a series of small streams.

Highest Pt. Mt. Kartala (2,361 m) (7,746 ft)

Lowest Pt. Indian Ocean (0 m) (0 ft)

Land Divisions 3 islands; Grand Comore (Njazidja), Anjouan (Nzwani), and Moheli (Mwali), as well as four municipalities named Domoni, Fomboni, Moroni, and Moutsamoudou.
