Boston is the capital of the state Massachusetts and is also the biggest city in New England. The city has several teams that call it home. Boston is the only city where all the facilities of professional sports are owned and operated privately. Arguably, the city’s professional teams had the most success in the 2000’s when they won an incredible ten championships. Boston is also famous for the Red Sox team. The Boston locals almost have an unwavering devotion and love for this team that plays in the Major League Baseball (MLB).

5. Boston Red Sox

Unsurprisingly, the Boston Red Sox are the first team to be mentioned here with a history so rich that goes back to the founding of the American League (AL). The Boston Red Sox is one of the four AL sides who still play in their mother city. The other three teams are the Chicago White Sox, Tigers, and Indians. They have been nicknamed the “Sox” or sometimes the “BoSox”, and they play home matches at Fenway Park found close to Kenmore Square in Boston’s Fenway Area. Fenway Park was created in the year 1912 making it the oldest stadium or sporting arena still in use in the United States to date. The stadium is used by the major professional sports.

The city’s rich history continues with Boston as the first city to host the first game of the World Series back in the year 1903 during which the Red Sox beat the Pittsburgh Pirates. This team has also garnered seven other series in the years 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 2004, 2007, and most recently in 2013.

4. Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins ice hockey side play their home games at the TD Garden just above North Station. The Bruins play in the National Hockey League (NHL) and were created in 1924. The team was among the Original Six and also the first American team of the NHL. The team has a streak of good luck, having won a total of six Stanley trophies with the most recent being in 2011 after beating the Vancouver Canucks. They previously played at the former Boston Arena.

Their longest rivalry has been with their Canadian rivals the Montreal Canadiens. The two teams have met a total of 34 times in the playoffs of the Stanley trophy, the Canadiens have won 18 times. The Bruins have been graced with several Hall of Famers who have played for the them including Milt Schmidt, and the great Bobby Orr among others.

3. Boston Celtics

This rich city is represented by the Boston Celtics who play in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Celtics team play home games at the TD Garden and were a part of the founders of the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The BAA was one of the two leagues that joined to form the current NBA.

The Celtics have the excellence and honour of winning the highest number of championships than any other side in the NBA. They have had an impressive winning streak between 1957 and 2008 where they won a whopping 17 championships. Between 1956 and 1959, they won an implausible 11 championships out of the total 13. To add to their victory accolade, they have also won a record 8 NBA titles consecutively from the year 1958 to 1966 under Bill Russell, a legendary sportsman. The other team members who managed to get into the NBA Hall of Fame include Bob Cousy, Larry Bird, and Nate Archibald to mention a few.

2. New England Patriots

Despite playing at the Foxboro Stadium in Foxborough in Massachusetts between 1971 and 2002, the New England Patriots is considered to be the football team representing Boston. Initially, the Patriots were playing in the American Football League (AFL) until the AFL merged with the National Football League (NFL) in the year 1970. During the 2002 season, the Gillette Stadium was officially opened which is adjacent to the Foxboro Stadium.

The New England Patriots have had plenty of success in the NFL having made nine appearances in the Super Bowl and have won five times in these Super Bowl appearances. They won the Super Bowl XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX, and then LI. They also made history by becoming the only side in the NFL to go on a run of 16 – 0 in a regular season since the NFL expanded in the year 1978 to a schedule of 16 games. Their legendary start quarterback Tom Brady, their shrewd coach, Bill Belichick, and other devotees helped to make the Patriots one of the most successful sides.

1. New England Revolution

The New England Revolution is a soccer club that competes professionally in the Major League Soccer (MLS). It is founded around the Greater Boston region and is in the league’s Eastern Conference. The team is also a side that is among the ten charter teams of the MLS and have competed in the MLS ever since its initiation. The New England Revolution and Patriots are owned by the same owner. Revolution play home games at the Gillette Stadium. Their previous home field was the Foxboro Stadium which was adjacent to the Gillette Stadium from the year 1996 to 2001. Revs (as nicknamed) have the distinction of being the only team in the MLS to have all their matches in the team’s televised. The Revs team was founded back in the year 1994.

The side’s first trophy came back in 2007 after winning the US Open Cup. The year 2008 was a successful one to the side after winning the North American SuperLiga. To date, they have taken part in five MLS CUP finals (2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2014). In 2005, they were awarded an award for having the second best regular season. The Revs have never won the MLS Supporter’s Shield or the MLS Cup in their history.
