Islands in the Clouds written by: Isabella Tree for the Lonely Planet
read and reviewed by: Chelsea Alexander, 12/01/04 book reader
The first person account of an amazing journey through the highlands of Papua New Guinea, one of the most dangerous and challenging places on this Lonely Planet.
The author, a young Englishwoman, helps the reader live her personal experiences with excellent narratives and vivid descriptions. Her sense of humor (she needed it), along with an obvious lust for adventure propells her deep into a country filled with ancient traditions and taboos, and one now facing the challenges of the modern world. I could not put it down.

The author's trip along the South American coastline followed that of Charles Darwin's journey on the now famous Beagle. He compares his travels with Darwins personal experiences, while describing in great detail the difficulties of the task at hand.
This book features beautiful pictures and the harsh on-board revelations of a sailing adventure around Cape Horn. If a family member enjoys sailing, this book will be a welcomed addition to their library.

The authors pilot a 40-foot sailboat on a 28,000 nautical-mile trip from Sweden to Antarctica and their experiences are riveting and remarkable. The three-year (dangerous trek) is beautifully documented by the well prepared authors, and I could not stop reading once the journey began.

Sacred Summits edited by: Graham White read and reviewed by: Chelsea Alexander, 07/25/03 book reader
A wonderful, informative book about the premier American naturalist, John Muir, and his climbing career. Still considered one of the most accomplished mountaineers of all time, Mr. Muir climbed without ropes and warm clothing, and he set many of the climbing standards used today. The book includes his writings and recollections, along with tales of contemporary climbers.

The Crisis of Islam written by: Bernard Lewis read and reviewed by: John Moen, 04/15/03 book reader
For me, a long-term personal misunderstanding and general lack of knowledge about Islam, and especially how it relates to the volatile Middle East situation needed clarification for a very long time. With this book I finally found what I needed, and much, much more.
The Crisis of Islam gives the reader a concise understanding of the relationship between Islam and the Christian West. In addition, it helps (in my opinion) to understand the attitude of the Muslim peoples, especially as they relate to the United States. I learned a great deal from this book, and would strongly suggest it, especially for history teachers and anyone interested in this fascinating culture.

Undaunted Courage written by: Stephen E. Ambrose read and reviewed by: John Moen, 02/12/03 book reader
In this epic journey, the true American tale of Lewis and Clark (two brave men with a vision) is chronicled, as they journey west into uncharted territory, along the Missouri River and others, in an effort to find a navigable route to the Pacific Ocean in the early 1800s.
Their historic adventure, approved and pushed-forward by then U.S. President Thomas Jefferson, is most exciting and truly captures their journey through Indian territories and the rugged mountain landscapes of the northwest. Their courageous trip changed the landscape of America forever.

Bringing Down the House written by: Ben Mezrich read and reviewed by: John Moen, 10/18/02 book reader
Most all of us have traveled to Las Vegas a few times, and if you're like me, you've thought about winning big in the casino and returning home with a big sack of money. You then build a mansion, buy a diamond-studded Rolex and a yacht, and retire. An impossible dream? Maybe!
This non-fiction book, besides being very entertaining, chronicles the MIT Blackjack Team, a group of young men backed by some investors, that over a period of years won millions with a card counting system while playing blackjack in Las Vegas. And according to the author, they're teams of students still winning today. In simple terms, it's a fascinating story, not a dream.

Tales of the South Pacific written by: James A. Michener read and reviewed by: John Moen, 09/17/02 book reader
I never really enjoyed South Pacific, the musical, however, the experiences and words of Michener, and the human dramas lived in the South Pacific during World War II are a real page turner. I loved it.
As Americans fought thousands of miles from home in this brutal war with the Japanese, Michener's memories (or stories) weave tales that explore all human emotions, and for that matter, frailties. The settings and descriptions are riveting, and it's easy to understand why South Pacific won the 1948 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

World Almanac 2002 written by: Ken Park read and reviewed by: John Moen, 07/25/02 book reader
I always buy the updated version each year, and I keep all of the older issues, just like my past copies of the National Geographic. For about $10 retail, this could be the best value in the entire world of books.
Obscure facts and useful data - it's all here. I would recommend it to any student, regardless of grade level, as you can find the answer to almost any homework question, and the best part is the answers are accurate and easy to locate.

Sailing Alone Around The World written by: Joshua Slocum read and reviewed by: John Moen, 05/31/02 book reader
I've always wanted to sail the Seven Seas, and this pocket book (under $8.00) is the closest I will no doubt ever get.
Mr. Slocum is recognized as the first person to sail single-handed around the world, and his boat, the Spray, a 36-footer, he built himself.
His trip began in the late 1800s, and this interesting book provides details about his boat and the sailing equipment of that era. His solitary trek across the seas is most interesting, and his meetings with famous people along the way adds to the mix.
This is the story of an epic journey, written by one-heck of a sailor.

If you're at all like me - confusion regarding the facts and history of the long-lasting conflict between the Israeli and Palestinian people - especially the current situation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, has never been totally clarified in my mind.
Well, Myths & Facts really helped my understanding of the situation. Important historical documents are reviewed, along with clear definitions of the often misunderstood disagreements. If you travel, regardless of the destination, you probably will admit that you hate the process of booking the trip. The recent attack on America reminds many Americans of the not-to-distant past, and the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. The USS Arizona is a detailed, well written chronicle and a most memorable book. It details the drama of the event, the legacy of the battleship, and offers a close look at its brave, brave crew. As America entered World War II, the USS Arizona is a poignant reminder of the courage of everyday men and the brutality of war

The Voyage written by: Philip Caputo read and reviewed by: Chelsea Alexander, 09/21/01 book reader
Three sons of a New England business tycoon are ordered to sail the family's schooner on an extended, unexplained trip. The boys adventure takes them south to Key West and their hazardous adventure makes for fast, enjoyable reading. They end up stranded in Cuba and when they ask their father for desperately needed help, he never responds.
Intrigued? What happened to the sons? Why did it happen? The somewhat satisfying ending to the story happens decades later, and if you relish a good tale of the sea by a master of words and history, this book is for you. It would make a great gift for the reader in your family.

In this world of fast-food restaurants (some with express lanes), high-speed elevators (some moving at thirty feet per second) and technology that speeds everything up to the point that the author ponders the question, "Where does all of the time we save go, and could we ever slow down, or even pause?" written by: Erik Larson

On September 8, 1900, a massive hurricane slammed into Galveston, Texas. (the home of our map company) Sustained winds exceeded 150mph with gusts to 200mph, or more. The sea followed and Galveston became Atlantis. Thousands of buildings and entire streets disappeared, and as many as 10,000 were dead, making this the worst natural disaster in America's history. This is the incredible story of a storm that makes the current popular movie, "The Perfect Storm," seem like a light breeze out of the north.
