There are various types of friction but we will be explaining the 4 main types of friction.
First, we have static friction and this is the friction that occurs when an object is resting on a solid surface and is the strongest. Get up, put on your shoes, and walk around your room. Why? That is static friction, and it happening between your shoes and the floor you are walking on. Without it, it would be really difficult to walk in a line or stop slipping. This is what happens when you walk on ice without ice skates if you have ever experienced that sensation. Ice does not provide the same amount of friction, and thus would make your walking very difficult.
Next, there is sliding friction, and this type of friction occurs when two objects are sliding against each other. Think about writing on a piece of paper with a pen; the pen slides with ease but there is an amount of friction happening that enables the pen to leave a mark on the paper.
Similarly, rolling friction happens when an object is rolling over a surface, like a ball or a wheel. Kicking a ball will result in the ball rolling on the ground for a certain distance but the rolling friction will resist it and slow it down. This friction is weaker than sliding friction.
Finally, there is fluid friction, and as its name suggests, it acts on objects that are in contact with fluid, like gas or liquid. This friction is the resistance you feel on your body when you try to move your limbs underwater.

Why Do We Need Friction In Our Lives?

However, sometimes we will want to reduce the friction that is happening. We will use a lubricant like oil to mend the friction inside the parts of a car engine or use devices like ball bearings to change the type of sliding friction. In short, life would not exist without friction.
