California Schools - Colleges and Universities

schools california

The nation's most populous state also boasts one of its best, if most complex, higher education systems. Some of the best schools in the country, of almost every variety, can be found in California; including the University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, the California Institute of Technology, and Pomona College, which is consistently rated as one of the top five small liberal arts colleges in the country.

However, these schools represent a small portion of a vast network of public and private higher education institutions in the state of California. More than 100 public institutions are members of its three-tier state school system, which includes 72 community colleges, 23 state universities and nine universities designated as members of "University of California." There are three public graduate-only institutions. Nearly 200 private colleges and universities are also chartered in California.

Admission to universities in the state school system, particularly those designated "University of California," is much more difficult for out-of-state applicants than California residents.
