The islands are semitropical with two distinct seasons, summer and winter.
During the summer months (May through November) the weather is warm and humid (often hot), with average daily high temperatures reaching near 85°F (29°C).
Winter months (December through April) are certainly cooler, but pleasant nevertheless. Daily high temps average 69°F (20°C).
Winter cold fronts that sweep across Florida do (on occasion) drop the winter temps to nearly 40°F (4.4°C), but only for brief amounts of time.
When rain does fall it is similar to the east coast of Florida, where strong showers with brisk wind are short-lived, followed by sunny skies.
Average rainfall amounts reach 55 in (1,397 mm) and rain most often falls in early summer and mid-fall.
The islands are certainly subject to hurricanes from July through October, but advance warnings are timely, and posted well in advance.
