Russia is the largest country in the world, spanning 11 time zones and situated on two continents. It's an extraordinarily beautiful country with vast changes in topography, offering diverse opportunities for adventure and sight-seeing for any traveler.

Certainly Moscow is at the top of the list with sites and attractions such as Red Square, Kremlin tours, St. Basil's Cathedral, Lenin's Mausoleum, Bolshoi Ballet Theater, Pushkin Museum, Moscow Circus performances, Moscow subway, Opera performances inside the Kremlin, dozens of smaller museums, and city and regional tours.

Across the country, other destinations to visit include Saint Petersburg and the Hermitage Museum, the St. Peter and Paul Fortress; the Summer Palaces on the Gulf of Finland; picturesque Novgorod; Black Sea resorts; River Volga tours; the Siberian wilderness; Lake Baikal, Vladivostok and the rugged Kamchatka Peninsula.

Travel Notice: There are ongoing tensions in Ukraine and there is potential for increased public demonstrations and anti-American actions in Russia in connection with actions in the Crimea.

It is strongly advised to avoid all travel to North Caucasus, in particular the regions of Chechnya, Dagestan, Ingushetia, North Ossetia, the south-east part of Stavropol bordering Chechnya, Karbardino-Balkaria (including the Elbrus area), and Karachay-Cherkessia because of the high threat of terrorist activity.

  • Times to Travel: Russia is a very large country with various climates, making it a year-round destination.

    The warmest months, July and August, are the main vacation season. In early July, St. Petersburg has endless days when the sun does not fully set. This period is called "White Nights," and is an excellent time to visit the city.

    In the winter, good bargains and better service can be easily found. Skiing is a favorite activity and there are several ski resorts from which to choose.

    Spring (May and June) is the festival season in Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

    In the fall, as the trees change their colors, the parks and green spaces are beautiful.
