More on Spain

The coat of arms of Spain was formed from the combination of six other coat of arms, namely those of Aragon, the House of Bourbon, Castile, Granada, Leon, and Navarre. The pillars on either side of the coat of arms are called the Pillars of Hercules. Atop the coat of arms is the royal crown of Spain.

The national anthem of Spain is the “Marcha Real” (“Royal March”). It is believed to be one of the world’s oldest national anthems, first appearing around the year 1761. Notable, the “Marcha Real” has no official lyrics and is often played as an instrumental piece.

The unofficial national flower of Spain is the carnation, likely because of its presence in southern Spain, particularly in the rural areas.

The bull is the national animal of Spain, while the eagle is the national bird.
