The New York Giants are one of two National Football League (NFL) teams in the New York City area. The franchise is worth $3.3 billion. The team was founded in 1925, when the late Tim Mara purchased a franchise for $500. The Giants won their first championship in 1927, under Steve Owen, who is still one of the winningest coaches in NFL history. The team would go on to win subsequent championships in 1956, 1986, and 1990.

9. Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA) are worth $3.5 billion. The team has not remained in one place during its history. It began in Philadelphia in 1946, but moved to San Francisco in 1962, where they were known as the San Francisco Warriors. Before the 1970-1971 season, they changed their name again to become the Golden State Warriors. During its history, the team has won six championships in the years 1947, 1956, 1975, 2015, 2017, and 2018.

8. Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers franchise is worth a total of $3.7 billion. The history of the team began, not in Los Angeles, but in Detroit, where they were called the Gems. Their first season was the inaugural season of the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1946. Just a year later, they moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota and changed their name to the Lakers, in reference to the Minnesota state nickname, the “Land of 10,000 lakes.” In 1948, the franchise became part of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), the official precursor of the current NBA. The NBA was formed a year later, and the Lakers would end up winning four of the first five NBA championships, crowning themselves the first pro basketball dynasty. Before the 1960-1961 season, the Lakers moved to their current home in Los Angeles.

7. New England Patriots

The NFL’s New England Patriots are based in Foxboro, Massachusetts, just south of Boston, and are worth $3.8 billion. The team was born in 1959, when Billy Sullivan Jr. purchased an American Football League (AFL) franchise. Initially located in Boston, they moved to Foxboro in 1971. Championship glory was slow to come for the franchise, as it was 2002 when they finally won their first Super Bowl, led by star quarterback Tom Brady. They would go on, however, to become a championship dynasty, winning four subsequent Super Bowls, including their last in Super Bowl XLIX, which followed the 2014 season.

6. Manchester United

Arguably one of the most popular soccer teams in the world, it is also one of the richest, valued at $3.81 billion. Located in Manchester, England, where they play in the famous stadium known as Old Trafford, the team was founded in 1878 by railway workers. The team has a very full trophy case, which includes 13 Premier League titles, 12 Football Association (FA) Cups, 5 Football League Cups, and 3 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League titles.

5. New York Knicks

Formally known as the New York Knickerbockers, the Manhattan-based NBA franchise is worth a cool $4 billion. The team was founded in 1946, and would find itself contending for championships early in the 1950s, though they failed to win any. Their greatest success would come in the 1970s, when they won two NBA championships in 1970 and 1973. Some notable players who have played for the franchise include Willis Reed, Bill Bradley, Patrick Ewing, and Carmelo Anthony.

4. FC Barcelona

The Spanish soccer franchise is worth just a bit more than the New York Knicks, at $4.02 billion. As its name implies, the team is based in Barcelona, Spain, and was founded in 1899. Since then, it has been a major symbol of the culture of Catalonia, the autonomous territory of which Barcelona is the capital. The team goes by the motto, “More than a club.” Today, it is one of the major franchises of La Liga, the top soccer league in Spain. It is also quite popular in Europe as a whole, having won the UEFA Champions League title four times.

3. Real Madrid

One of Barcelona’s main rivals, Real Madrid is worth $4.24 billion. The club officially came into being in 1902. Like Barcelona and Manchester United, Real Madrid is one of the most successful soccer teams in the world. The team has won 33 La Liga titles, 19 Copa Del Rey (King’s Cup) titles, and 13 UEFA Champions League titles. Famous players like Christiano Ronaldo, Zinadine Zidane, and Hugo Sanchez have had the honor of playing for the squad.

2. New York Yankees

The Yankees, sometimes nicknamed the Bronx Bombers, are arguably the most storied franchise in baseball history. Some of the greatest baseball players who ever lived, including Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, and Joe DiMaggio have suited up in the team’s pinstriped uniforms. Today, the team is worth $4.6 billion, making it the most valuable team in baseball and the second most valuable team in all of sports.

1. Dallas Cowboys

Nicknamed “America’s Team,” the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys are now the wealthiest franchise in all of sports, valued at $5 billion. Compared to most of the other teams on this list, the Cowboys are relatively young, having been founded in 1960. Success came quickly to the franchise. They managed to pull off twenty consecutive winning seasons from 1966. They won their first Super Bowl in 1972, and went on to win four more after that, including back-to-back wins in 1993 and 1994, then again in 1996.
