The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional ice hockey league in North America and is considered one of the "Big Four" major professional sports leagues in the United States (US) and Canada. The league is composed of 31 teams, 24 of which are based in the United States, while the other 7 are based in Canada. The NHL was founded on November 26, 1917, in Montreal, Canada, following the suspension of the National Hockey Association. The prestigious Stanley Cup is awarded to the playoffs champion team, while the Presidents’ Trophy is awarded to the team with the most points during the regular season. The NHL teams and their locations are listed below.

NHL Teams by Country

Canadian NHL Teams

Of the 31 teams that play in the NHL, seven are in based in Canadian cities. Three Canadian NHL teams are members of the Eastern Conference, while the other four belong to the Western Conference. The Montreal Canadiens, which are the most successful team in NHL history based on 24 Stanley Cup championships, are based in Montreal, Quebec, and play home games at the Bell Centre. The Ottawa Senators are based in Ottawa, Ontario, and play home matches at the Canadian Tire Centre. The Toronto Maple Leafs, which are the second most successful team in NHL history, are based in Toronto, Ontario, and play home games at Scotiabank Arena. The Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers are based in Calgary, Alberta,  and Edmonton, Alberta, respectively. Given their close proximity, the two teams have a rivalry known as the "Battle of Alberta." The other two Canadian franchises are the Winnipeg Jets, which play home games at the Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and the Vancouver Canucks, which are based in Vancouver, British Columbia and play in Rogers Arena.

American NHL Teams

The 24 US-based NHL teams are spread across 18 states, some of which contain as many as three teams. For example, the state of California has three teams, all of which are in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference: the Los Angeles Kings, which are based in Los Angeles and play at the Staples Center; the Anaheim Ducks, which are based in Anaheim and play at the Honda Center; and the San Jose Sharks, which are based in San Jose and play in the SAP Center. The state of New York also contains three NHL teams, namely the New York Islanders and New York Rangers, which are both based in New York City, and the Buffalo Sabres.

Florida and Pennsylvania are both represented by two NHL teams. The Tampa Bay Lightning are based in Tampa, Florida, and the Florida Panthers are based in the Miami, Florida. The Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins are based in Philadelphia and Pittsburg, respectively. Other cities with teams in the NHL include Boston (Bruins), Detroit (Red Wings), Raleigh (Hurricanes), Newark (New Jersey Devils), and Washington, D.C. (Capitals).

Why Are Canadian Teams Not Winning the Stanley Cup?

Although the Montreal Canadiens are the most successful team in the NHL history, winners of 24 Stanley Cups, no Canadian team has won the championship since 1993. While some blame the long drought on bad luck, others believe the drought is due to the fact that there are fewer Canadian Teams in the NHL, as well as a limited capacity of some Canadian teams to invest in their franchises.
