This includes things like oxygen and various nutrients, as well as the removal of waste matter. Homeostasis is a state that is necessary for our organisms, and it helps us stay healthy.

Not only is it a state, it also refers to all of the processes our body goes through to achieve and maintain this state. We need to be able to keep a constant internal environment to be able to stay healthy. Homeostasis is actually an extremely important trait shared by most living things. To keep the body in a state of homeostasis, the organism needs to constantly adapt to various outside and inside factors. In this article, we will take a look at how the human body is able to maintain homeostasis.

Vasodilation

We can say that the body uses five different ways to maintain homeostasis. It regulates the temperature of the body, its glucose levels, toxins, blood pressure and pH levels. Starting things off is the regulation of temperature. We all know that the body must maintain a constant temperature in order to remain healthy. As soon as our temperature rises, we start to feel sick and more often than not are required to visit a doctor.

Once this happens, our body reacts as well. It starts to employ vasodilation in order to cool down. Vasodilation is the process of the widening of blood vessels. By doing this, our bodies allow more heat to escape through the skin. This way, our temperature can be lowered more easily, and we can escape the danger of a sickness.

The Glucose Levels and Toxins

Another thing that needs to be constantly regulated by our bodies are the glucose levels. Once the levels of glucose start to get too high, our bodies release insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the beta cells of the pancreatic islets. It is the main hormone that regulates our metabolism. If the glucose levels are too low, the body starts converting the glycogen into glucose.

Our bodies also contain various toxins, and once they start appearing in blood they can disrupt the homeostasis. The body deals with this signal in a simple manner. It signals the urinary system to start excreting the toxins. Yes, you’ve read that correctly. By urinating we are able to maintain the homeostasis in our body.

Blood And pH Levels

Another important thing for homeostasis is blood pressure. It needs to be kept at a healthy level at all times. Our bodies take care of this through the brain. The brain is what sends signals to the heart. These signals tell it to either slow down or speed up, depending on the blood pressure.

The last way our bodies maintain homeostasis is through the regulation of the pH levels. This is controlled by the lungs, and once these levels start to be unstable, the lungs push more or less carbon dioxide out of our diaphragms. By doing this, the pH levels in our bodies can either be lowered or raised, depending on the need. The process of regulating the pH levels in an organism is called the acid-base homeostasis.
