- Days on Venus are longer than years. A day lasts 243 Earth days while the year lasts 225 Earth Days.
- Mantis shrimp has a punch that is the equivalent to a 22-caliber bullet.
- An adult human body contains almost 100,000 miles of blood vessels.
Our planet is filled with things that fill us with awe and make us happy to be alive. All it takes is a few minutes of exploring and you are sure to stumble upon a fact that seems almost unreal but is true. Some of the things might seem ridiculous, almost to the point where it is hard to believe someone did not make them up.
But that is just a part of the beauty of our world, thousands of things that can impress us, surprise us or even confuse us. Some of those things might be completely trivial, but worth mentioning nonetheless. Of course, the opposite can happen as well, with things you were certain were true ending up being false. However, we are not talking about those today. So we have compiled a list of 10 of the most ridiculous facts that might not seem true, but they definitely are.
Elephants Can Hear With Their Feet
Elephants are majestic creatures indeed, and their large ears make it seem as if no sound can go by without them picking it up. While that is true, an interesting fact is that they can also use their feet to “hear”. They use feet to detect noises that are extremely far away. Elephants freeze in one spot, lean forward and put their entire weight on their front legs to be able to do this.
Garfield Phones Washing Ashore In France
This story is pretty ridiculous but is too funny to not be mentioned. On the shores of the Brittany region of France, Garfield Phones started washing up in the 1980s. Yes, Garfield, the cartoon cat, and yes, phones shaped like that cat. This continued for 35 years. People were constantly finding phones washed ashore but no one knew how or why this was happening.
Well, the mystery was solved in 2015 when it was found out that a ship carrying a large number of phones was caught in a storm and ended up in a cave. The phones were constantly being picked up by waves from the containers and brought to the shore.
Our Blood Vessels Are Long… Extremely Long!
There are almost 8 billion people living on Earth, so it is safe to say that our planet is much larger than a single person. However, what if we told you that human adults have an amount of blood vessels that could circle the entire planet four times if placed next to each other.
That’s right, the exact length of the blood vessels in an adult human’s body is almost 100,000 miles. Considering that the planet’s equator is 24,901 miles long, the math is correct and makes up for quite a fascinating fact.
Bees Can Live Inside Our Eyes
Being stung by a bee is not the only thing you need to worry about when you are dealing with these insects. A woman in Taiwan thought a bit of dirt got in her eye after it started swelling up. Once she went to a doctor they found something black that resembled an insect leg in her eye. The doctor started pulling it out and managed to find four small bees living inside the eye feeding on the woman’s tears.
Clouds Weigh More Than You May Believe
Clouds seem so fluffy and light, they can’t weigh that much, right? You’d be surprised. According to scientists that research our atmosphere, an average cumulus cloud actually weighs somewhere around 1.1 million pounds. This is due to the water content inside the cloud, but it is a surprising fact nonetheless.
A Zombie Chicken Once Existed
Well, not exactly, but almost! Chicken have the majority of their brains concentrated at the far back end of their skulls, and their brains are quite small. Because of that, it is possible for a chicken to live for a long time just off the nerve endings of their brain. This happened in 1945 when a chicken lived for 18 months after being decapitated. The family that chopped its head kept the chicken as a pet and poured food and water in its esophagus. Gross, but it happened!
You Should Avoid Getting Punched By A Shrimp
A mantis shrimp, to be exact. Its punch is so incredibly fast that the human eye can’t see it. The force of the punch is the same as that of a 22-caliber bullet, so better be careful when dealing with these crustaceans. Mantis shrimps are fascinating because of other things as well, including their ability to see color better than any other animal in existence.
Nintendo Was Founded In 1889
Yup, you’ve read that correctly. The company famous for its video game consoles and legendary characters such as Donkey Kong and Super Mario is around 100 years older than the things it is most known for. Nintendo actually started as a card game company in the 19th century and branched out into other fields throughout the years.
Honey Can’t Expire
The chemical composition of honey is so perfect that it can never spoil. Since no organisms can live inside it, nothing can spoil it, which means it is forever edible. Seriously, 5,000-year-old honey was discovered and nothing suggests that it can’t be eaten.
Days Can be Longer Than Years… On Venus
Yeah, even though sometimes it seems like a day just won’t end, it seems there are places where stuff like that literally happens. There is a scientific explanation for this, though. One day is measured by how long it takes for a planet to rotate around its own axis, while a year is one rotation around the Sun. Well, Venus takes 243 Earth days to rotate around itself, and 225 Earth Days to travel around the Sun, meaning days are longer than years there.
