Texas schools - colleges and universities

schools texas

Higher education in Texas has made strides in the last decade, particularly in terms of the publicly funded schools. There are 32 public colleges and universities spread across six state university systems. Four additional public universities operate independently.

Partially due to a plan developed by the THECB, or Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the state's public colleges and universities have reached some significant milestones. Enrollment for African American and Hispanic students today is double what it was in 2000, and the number of Masters' Degrees awarded annually has gone up in every year since 2003 except one.

Texas does not have the same proliferation of small liberal arts colleges that can be found in New England or California. However, a number of private universities also call Texas home, among them Baylor University, Rice University and Southern Methodist University. Outside of the University of Texas-Austin, the flagship public university, Rice University has the state's highest endowment: $4.84 billion.
