Climate:
In simple terms South Carolina's weather is hot and humid in summer, with short, mild winters.
Prevailing weather conditions here are also the result of low elevations, consistently warm Gulf Stream waters, and the Appalachian Mountains, which in winter help block cold air from entering the interior of the state.
January is the coldest month, with average high temperatures ranging from 32 degrees in the mountains of the far-northwest, to 55 degrees central and coastal.
July is the warmest month, with temperature averages ranging from 70 degrees in the northwest, to 92 degrees central and coastal.
Annual precipitation (
mostly spring and summer rains) averages near 50 inches. Higher amounts (
including snow) fall in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
