Concord is the state capital of New Hampshire. The city includes the villages of Penacock, East Concord and West Concord and is home to the Franklin Pierce Law Center, the only law school in the state. Situated in the south of the state on the Merrimack River, this truly New England town is the perfect base for a fall foliage tour.

The surrounding countryside features rolling hills, forests and protected wildlife refuges. Fishing, camping, kayaking, and hiking opportunities are plentiful at nearby lakes and state parks. The city itself is home to the arts, museums, festivals, a symphony orchestra, and lots of historic New Hampshire homes and landmarks to tour.

  • Christa MacAuliffe, the New Hampshire schoolteacher who perished in the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, hailed from Concord.
  • Residents of New Hampshire are not required to pay any state income tax.
  • The very first alarm clock was invented in Concord, New Hampshire by Mr. Levi Hutchins. It rang once each morning at 4am.
  • First known as the town of Rumford, the name Concord became official in 1765.

  • McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center
    This aerospace museum and planetarium hosts a wide variety of interactive programs and exhibits for all ages. The museum honors New Hampshire natives astronaut Alan Shepard and schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe of the fateful Challenger expedition.

    Permanent exhibits include a space shuttle model and the mercury capsule, 3D solar system models and interactive learning stations. The Planetarium seats 103 guests and hosts shows such as Tonight's Sky, Impact Earth and Ice Worlds.

    Super Stellar Fridays is a teen program including star gazing and pizza. The Center also hosts summer camp, scout programs and sponsors student challenges such as the Astronomy Bowl.

  • Capitol Center for the Arts
    This state of the art entertainment center hosts a wide range of music, dance, theater and comedy performances year round. Concord's main civic center features performers including Jazz great Winton Marsalis and comedian Ron White of the Redneck Comedy Tour.

    Their Spotlight Café hosts 'inventive music and theater' in a laid back club atmosphere for up and coming new music, dance and comedy acts. New York productions visit regularly, such as Monte Python's Spamalot and Spring Awakening. The Center also offers a children's summer series.

  • Douglas N. Everett Ice Skating Arena
    This spacious skating arena, open from September to mid-March, is a popular local favorite when the New Hampshire seasons change. Run by the City of Concord, the arena hosts many local school hockey games and practices.

    They offer public skating times, group and private ice skating lessons. The rink is also available to rent for special events.
