Climate:
North Carolina's weather is best summarized as being wet in spring, hot and humid in summer, perfect in the fall and relatively mild in winter.
Across the state, climate varies based on elevation, and in the upper reaches of the Piedmont Plateau, and the high peaks of the western mountains, temperatures are cooler than the coastal areas.
Overall, February is the coldest month, with average highs near 55 degrees, and lows near 10 degrees. July is the warmest month, with temperature averages ranging from 70 degrees in the northwest, to the low 90's central and coastal.
Annual precipitation (
mostly spring and summer rains) averages near 50 inches. Much higher amounts (
including snow) fall in the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains.
