Illinois schools colleges and universities

illinois symbols
The Midwestern state of Illinois offers a diverse selection of schools, from large Big Ten universities to small, private liberal arts colleges to elite research universities.

Two of the best-ranked universities in the state are Northwestern University and the University of Chicago, where U.S. President Barack Obama served as a senior lecturer from 1992-2004. However, several of the state's other top-performing schools are dramatically smaller; Knox College, for example, has an enrollment of just over 1,000 students and regularly places in the top 75 liberal arts colleges in the country.

The most prominent public university in the state, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, enrolls 44,520 students, 23 percent of whom come from states other than Illinois. Its athletic teams compete in the Big Ten. In 2007, their mascot, Chief Illiniwek, was retired from appearance. Without a replacement, the Fighting Illini remain one of the few major athletic schools in the country without a mascot.
