Scores of people once gathered here to aggressively protest a barrier that was to be built across a waterway, a barrier designed to control the flow of water for electricity production. Those (in-the-news) protesters lost that battle. (In 1979 the city made headlines for weeks, as many people (especially environmentalists) demonstrated and used civil disobedience to prevent the building of a dam in order to produce hydropower. The dam was built, however, and the river still offers good salmon fishing)
