Initially named to honor a bird lover, this place was later saddled with an applicable nickname during a national crisis. (Named for Henry D. Minot, railroad investor and ornithologist, it was called "Little Chicago" during America's prohibition, as it was a central hub of Al Capone's liquor smuggling operations)

No stranger to disasters (including flooding), it was the site of one of a country's most devastating chemical accidents. (On January 18, 2002, a severe train derailment west of the city sent a gigantic cloud of anhydrous ammonia toward the city. Many of Minot's citizens were sickened and severely injured by the noxious gas, and the anhydrous ammonia spill was the largest such spill in U.S. history)
