This capital city is referred to as the most important tourist destination in a country. (Cusco is the historic capital of the Inca Empire, and the capital of the Cusco Region and Province. It's also the gateway to Machu Picchu, the Inca site discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham. It is today South America's most important cultural attraction.)

Its moniker is spelled (unofficially) in different ways, both in modern cartography and in the annuals of online and offline encyclopedias. (Cusco, or Cuzco...take your pick. Both British and American maps and publications use both S or Z. The Encyclopedia Britannica writes "Cuzco," we use "Cucso.")
