As varied factions struggled for control, this place was secretly purchased in the 18th century by a familiar worldwide power. (In 1764 it was purchased secretly by France from the Republic of Genoa. After an announcement and a short civil war (1768-69) it was incorporated into France in 1770)

That unfriendly acquisition precipitated a bloody, yet succinct civil war, and although hostilities ended a long time ago there are still ongoing disputes over autonomy, language and taxes. (Despite belonging to France, the island’s close affinity with Italy is clearly to be seen in its wealth of Italianate churches and a language that’s closely linked to the Tuscan dialect. Even today national feelings still ran high, especially regarding the official language, and the passionate desire to obtain additonal freedoms from the mainland)
