And speaking of canals.....this one was also costly to build, and in many ways (even today) costly for the surrounding environment. (The canal connected the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, saving weeks of additional travel time for ships of the day. It is estimated to have cost over $100 million Euros at today's exchange rates)

It took thousands of workers to finish this nearly two-decade-long project, and when finished it was considered one of the world's great engineering accomplishments. (At peak construction levels there were 12,000 laborers on the whole project including 600 women)
