It was once (for the most part) just a simple village, then it was declared the capital and government-types moved in. (Under the reign of King Norodom, the Royal Palace was built here, and it soon became the permanent seat of government)

That initial governmental move proved just the beginning, as one-half-century later, agricultural improvements, upgraded transportation facilities and a new port pushed it onto the world stage. (Once known as the Pearl of Asia, it was French Colonialists that expanded the canal system, constructed roads and built a very functional port on the edge of the Mekong River)
