In its relentless rush to the sea, water made a downward cut into solid rock here, forming a mostly little known landform that is now a mostly little known recreation area. (This deep, narrow gorge was cut by the Delaware River in the Kittatinny Mountains, sixty-five miles northwest of New York City. This gorge was worn through the solid rock of the mountains hundreds of years ago when the Delaware River was forcing its way to the sea. The gorge is three miles long, with steep, rocky walls rising as high as 1,400 feet on each side. The beautiful scenery makes it a popular summer resort.)
