This popular and vital stop for many a mariner was once booming with commercial interests of all description, some legal, some not. (It was the epicenter of shipping commerce in Jamaica, and most of the Caribbean during the 17th century. It subsequently earned a reputation as both the "richest and most corrupt city in the world." Notorious for its gaudy displays of wealth and loose morals, it was a popular place for pirates and privateers to bring and spend their treasure)

And then (suddenly) most of it was wiped off the map, and the scattered remains of same have never been the same. (On June 7, 1692, a well-documented earthquake largely destroyed Port Royal, causing two thirds of the city to sink into the Caribbean Sea. Now covered by at least 25 ft (8 m) of water, it's referred to as the "City that Sank," and is widely considered the most important underwater archaeological site in the western hemisphere)
