The genesis of its major claim to fame (a hometown business of size) began during America's Civil War when a man (born in England) stepped off a train here. (When the railroad arrived in the 1860s, it brought new residents and business opportunities. In 1863, Dr. William W. Mayo arrived as the examining surgeon for draftees in the Civil War. He founded the Mayo Clinic that now employs approximately 30,000 people and treats more than 500,000 patients a year from 150 countries.)
