This place took its name from a somewhat obscure military leader that supervised the construction of numerous facilities in the general area. (Fort Lauderdale is named after a series of forts built by the United States during the Second Seminole War. The forts took their name from Major William Lauderdale, who was the commander of the detachment of soldiers who built the first forts)

It remained all but unpopulated until the beginning of the 20th century, but that all changed because of a ferry and a growing railroad network. (In 1893 a ferry began to operate across the New River, and in 1896 the Florida East Coast Railroad completed a route through the area)
