Its name was changed in the early 20th century because of the incredible amount of wildlife that inhabited the area. (The town was renamed Birdsville by the owner of Pandie Pandie Station who was amazed by the diversity of birdlife which inhabited the area)

One species found here in copious numbers is considered rather unusual, as they're not normally associated with such an isolated area. (It is considered extraordinary to find seagulls in the salt lakes which exist in the area)
