Zagreb is the largest city in Croatia with the highest population due to immigration. Zagreb extends to about 19 miles east to west, and about 12 miles north to south. The city is located in the northwest region of the country on the slopes of the Medvednica Mountain along the Sava River. Zagreb is a major administrative division in Croatia as it has been divided into seventeen administrative units. The city is also divided into 70 settlement zones with 218 local committees. Zagreb is the seat of the central government, administrative bodies, and a majority of the government ministries.

The history of Zagreb dates back to the time between the first and fifth century when the oldest settlement was established. Zagreb was a Roman town. The name Zagreb can be traced to 1094 when the city served mainly as home to the Zagreb cathedral as well as some merchants. The city had been divided into two city centers (Kaptol and Gradec) which merged in 1851. During the Yugoslavian rule, Zagreb served as a major economic center and was later declared the capital of Croatia after the declaration of independence of Croatia from Yugoslavia. During the 16-18th century, Zagreb served as the seat of the Ban of Croatia representing Croatia, Slavonia, and Dalmatia. The city was developed during the 20th centuries with roads, railways, and waterways being created thus opening up the city. Many industries were set up making the city a major economic center for Croatia.

Today, Zagreb serves some functions from political to economic. The city is the capital and administrative city of Croatia which are its core functions. Besides administrative duties, Croatia acts as an educational center due to its large number of learning institutions including 136 primary schools, 100 secondary schools and five public institutions of higher learning. The museums, archaeological center and the Croatian museum of naïve art make the city an important historical center. Zagreb is an important economic center, as well with some industries including electrical machines, pharmaceutical, textile, food processing, and many local and international industries.
