The nine largest hospitals in the world are Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, West China Medical Center of Sichuan University, Clinical Center of Serbia, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Ahmedadab Civil Hospital, Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Presbyterian Hospital, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and St. George’s Hospital. The large size of these hospitals and their professional staff allows them to attend to large numbers of patient both locally and internationally.

The Largest Hospitals in the World

Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, simply referred to as Chang Gung, is located in Taoyuan City, in Taiwan. It was founded in 1976 and has been accredited by the Taiwan Joint Commission Hospital Accreditation (TJCHA). Chang Gung has a bed space of 10,000 and attends to 8.2 million outpatients every year. Out of these patients, 2.4 million of them are inpatients. Furthermore, the hospital treats about 20,000 international patients annually. Some of the specialties and sub-specialties of Chang Gung Hospital include liver transplant, re-constructive microsurgery, and treatment of the craniomaxillofacial deformity. Chang Gung is known for over 1,000 successful liver transplants.

The West China Medical Center of Sichuan University is located in Chengdu, Sichuan County in China. It is the largest hospital in China, and the second largest in the world. According to China’s hospital rankings, West China Hospital is the best hospital in the country. The hospital is administered by China’s Ministry of Education. West China has a bedspace of 4,300 and attends to approximately 3.5 million people. Out of this number, 93,900 patients undergo surgery. The hospital has employed 6,100 permanent staff including over 550 associate professors and professors. West China Hospital constitutes 15 medical technology departments, 36 clinical departments, and 25 open laboratories.

In addition, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is the largest hospital in Africa and the whole of southern hemisphere of the world. It is located in Johannesburg in South Africa. The hospital has a bed space of 3,400 and 429 buildings whose floor area amounts to 233,795 squared meters. Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital was originally a military hospital at the time of the World War II. Afterwards, during the Apartheid in South Africa, the hospital was used as a civilian hospital for Black patients. Currently, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is administered by the Gauteng Provincial Department of Health and serves 2,000 patients every day.

One upcoming hospital known as Mayo Clinic will be the 2nd largest in the world when it is complete. The hospital is being constructed in the United States.
