Zambia, officially the Republic of Zambia, is a landlocked country in the southern part of Africa. It borders seven countries which are the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and Angola. The country’s capital and largest city are Lusaka which is the heart of the country’s economy resulting in the highest number of inhabitants in the country. Zambia covers an area of 290,587 square miles and an estimated population of 16.2 million. The country gained its independence on October 24th, 1964 and since then, it was named the fastest growing country economically by the World Bank.

Lusaka

Lusaka, the capital and the largest of Zambia, was founded in 1913 by the British government and majority of its residents were Europeans and Asians. It is located in the southern part of the central plateau at an elevation of 4,196 feet. English is the main language spoken in the city, but other native languages such as the Nyanja and Bemba are also common. It is the heart of the country’s commerce and government since most businesses and government offices like the national assembly, are located here which has resulted in the high population of 1.7 million. Most of Zambia’s finest schools are located here making it a center of education as well. The mode of transport found here are airplanes and buses

Kitwe

Kitwe also known as Kitwe-Nkana is the second largest city in Zambia. It was founded in 1936 during the building of the railway in the north-central Zambia. It is among the most developed areas in the country hence a population of 504,194. The city has businesses established, industries, schools and institutions of higher learning. The most common forms transport are the railway, roads, and air.

Chipata

Chipata formerly known as Fort Jameson is the third most populated city in Zambia founded in 1899. It has a population of 455,783. It is the fifth most developed city in the country and the most developed in the eastern province. It is an administrative and business center with several shopping malls, a university, colleges and other learning institutions, central hospital, and a modern market.

Ndola

Ndola is the third largest and the second oldest city in Zambia founded in 1904 by John Edward. It is the fourth most populated city with a population of 455,194. It is located in Ndola District, Copperbelt Province making it its capital as it is the main industrial and commercial center. It has developed over the years to become a commercial city and is also home to an international airport. The common forms of transport are roads, air, pipelines, and railways.

Kabwe

Kabwe, formerly known as Broken Hill, is a town located in Kabwe District, Central Province in Zambia. The town is the capital of the central province was founded in 1902 when Lead and Zinc deposits were also discovered. It has been known over the years as an important transportation and mining center as well as the birthplace of the Zambian politics.

Other Cities In Zambia

Chingola is a city in the Copperbelt province founded in 1943 when copper mining was begun. It has grown to a population of 157,340. Livingstone, a city, located in the Southern province, is a tourism center and a historical colonial city with a population of 136,897. Luanshya town is located in the Copperbelt province with a population of 117,579. It was founded in the early 20th century when copper was discovered.
