Across the world, dogs are one of the most common types of pets, and it is no wonder why. Dogs are known for their incredibly friendly nature and their natural loyalty. However, despite the fact that most dogs are peaceful animals who will not become aggressive unless provoked, they do possess the ability to bite. The biting power of dogs is different depending on the type of dog. The strength of a dog’s bite can be measured by its PSI,  or Pound Per Square Inch (PSI). Below is a list of dog breeds with the strongest bites. 

10. Malinois

The Malinois is a medium breed dog that originated from Maline, France. The dog has a strong sense of smell and for this reason, is often used by law enforcement forces as detection dogs. They are very intelligent dogs that can be trained easily. The bite force of an adult Malinois is 195, meaning they can apply 195 pounds of pressure to one square inch per bite.

9. Chow Chow

For over 4000 years, the Chow Chow (pictured above) was developed and bred in Mongolia and later adopted by China. Due to their voluminous coat, Chow Chows require frequent grooming. As Chow Chows can be difficult to train, they are not a recommended breed for first-time dog owners. The Chow Chow has a bite force of 220 psi.

8. Dutch Shepherd

This dog originated in the Netherlands. Its hardworking nature led to it being termed as shepherd because it is used by farmers to help in their daily chores. This breed can adapt to any climate. Dutch Shepherds are also loyal, intelligent and friendly with kids. They have a bite force of 224 psi.

7. American Pitbull

American Pitbulls are medium sized dogs that are powerful and muscular. American Pitbulls, or simply Pitbulls, have an athletic body that requires exercise frequently. If not engaged in activity, Pitbulls can be destructive. Their jaws have a bite force of 235 psi.

6. German Shepherd

German Shepherds are one of the most popular domestic dogs in the entire world and are often used in rescue missions because of their exceptional nature. German Shepherds are hard working and easily adaptable. However, their jaws have a bite force of 238, which means that they could break any bone in the human body.

5. American Bull Dog

American Bull Dogs are known for their strength and power. American Bull Dogs are very sturdy and strong. They a large head with a muscular body. Their powerful nature enables them to attack their opponent in case of danger. The bite force of their jaws is 305 psi.

4. Rottweiler

Rottweilers were originally trained to pull carts and to guard. Rottweilers are powerful and can endure hard work for long periods of time. They are characterized by their fearless nature since they can react to danger swiftly.  Rottweilers have a bite force of 328.

3. Mastiff

The English Mastiff is a large dog breed. They are known for being calm, which gives them the nickname of gentle giants. However, they have a very strong bite and can destroy their enemies. Their jaw is strong with a bite force of 556.

2. Doberman

Doberman dogs range in size from either medium and large. The Doberman is intelligent, strong and alert. This explains why they are often used as guard dogs. Dobermans also have one of the strongest bite force of about 600 psi.

1.Kangal

The origin of the Kangal can be traced to Sivas city in Turkey. They are the strongest dog in the world and are used to protect sheep against  giant predators like Jackals, Wolfs, and Bears. According to researchers, Kangals have the strongest bite of any dog, at 743 psi.
